Remembrance Field

Let’s stand knee deep in the moment;
Sit on the edge of tomorrow
& remember yesterday.
Trace your fingers around my laugh lines
& remember their sincerity.
I’ll never have to forget the depth of your eyes
Nor the vivid color of your words.
And we will both settle in that quiet lull
Between reality and a dream.
Close our eyes and hold our breath,
For the fear we will lose ourselves.
When tomorrow comes, the sun will steal away today.
We’ll dig our limbs into the ground
And brace ourselves.
I’ll dig my fingers into your skin
& remember the warmth beneath them.
And you’ll run a hand across my cheek
And promise to the warmth beneath it.
But when the sun crawls away, so will this frozen moment.
Your eyes will forget mind.
Your touch will fall cold.
& though we’d dug our roots into this happiness,
We’ll be lifted away like wilted flowers
Only to be forgotten.
